80 years together: How Texas sweethearts became the world’s ‘oldest married couple
A couple in Austin, Texas, have just acquired an illustrious title, one that many aspire to but few will achieve. John Henderson, 106, and Charlotte Henderson, 105, have just become the oldest couple in the world, with a combined age of 211, according to Guinness World Records. They recently celebrated 80 years of wedded bliss!
The pair met in 1934 as students at the University of Texas, where Charlotte was studying to be a professor and John was playing football. Since 2010, he has held the distinction of the oldest living former football player at UT, and attends a game every year.
They married in December 1939 and spent their honeymoon in a motel room for $7.
80 years of marriage later, Charlotte is still by John’s side.
The couple enjoys watching sports together at the Longhorn Village retirement community where they have lived for the past decade. John Henderson played football for the University of Texas. The two shared a life that included everything from far-flung trips to countless favourite meals.
Most recently, a Guinness World Record – in August, the Hendersons were named the oldest couple on Earth, with an aggregate age of 211 years.
As for the secret to his longevity and happiness, John Henderson puts it together to exercise and having a positive attitude.
In 2017, John stated that he lives in moderation. Never go overboard with anything. Eat healthily. Get good rest. Don’t drink too much. Don’t eat too much. And get frequent exercise.
