My daughter brought her boyfriend home to meet us, but the moment my husband saw him, he pointed to the door and strictly forbade her from seeing him again.
Our daughter had always been private about her personal matters. Sure, she would tell us about her classes, her goals, even little dramas with her friends, but never once mentioned boys. My husband and I often teased that she must be waiting for the perfect time to introduce us to someone important.
And that day finally arrived. She suddenly declaired that she wanted us to meet her boyfriend.
That Sunday morning, I was busy in the kitchen preparing a festive table. My husband paced the apartment with a clouded face, which I dismissed as ordinary fatherly nerves.
When the bell rang, I smiled and opened the door.
A tall man in a neat suit stood there. Beside him was our daughter, glowing with joy.
“Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend,” she introduced proudly, making my heart squeeze for a moment.
But right after, I saw my husband’s expression change sharply. His face stiffened, then went pale.
“You?..” he whispered hoarsely. “Why are you here?”
I’m your daughter’s boyfriend.
What?? – my husband’s voice shook. – Leave this house! Right now!
“Dad!” our daughter cried in surprise. “What’s happening?”
That was when my husband revealed the terrible truth about her new love.
Clenching his fists, he said piercingly:
This man… I ended up in prison because of him. He backstabbed me when we were young. We got caught up in a case, and he shifted all the blame on me. I lost a whole year of my life. He’s my old classmate.
The room fell silent. Our daughter gazed at us in confusion and rage:
So what? He isn’t the same person he was twenty years ago! I love him!
Her boyfriend left faintly. Our daughter rushed after him, slamming the door behind.
We remained alone. My husband’s breathing was uneven, his hands trembling. I could see his old wounds reopening. Yet I also understood my daughter: love cannot be commanded.
Now we faced the hardest decision of all—either accept this man for her happiness or risk losing her trust completely.
