A Woman Tried to Steal My Seat on the Plane for Her Son; I Refused

One woman found herself at a crossroads, torn between societal expectations and standing up for her own comfort. The conflict arose during a flight, where the pressure to be generous clashed with her determination to prioritize personal space.

This incident occurred aboard the airliner.

I’m traveling across the nation to celebrate Christmas with my brother and his husband. Knowing how crucial comfort is, especially given my girth, I decided to book an extra seat for the voyage. Paying more isn’t the most pleasant thing to do, but it’s the reality.

Initially, everything went perfectly with check-in, security, and boarding. However, a problem happened when a woman approached my row with her son, who was about 18 months old.

She insisted on squeezing me into one seat so her son could have the other. Instead of asking, she instructed me to do so. I gently declined, noting that I had paid for the additional seat for my personal comfort.

The flight attendant noticed this after the woman complained that I was occupying her son’s seat. I displayed my boarding cards as proof that I had paid for the extra room. The flight attendant asked if I could make room, but I insisted on the seat I had paid for.

The flight attendant eventually instructed the woman to have her son sit on her lap, as is common for children of his age during flights. Throughout the journey, I endured dirty looks and passive-aggressive remarks from the woman, but I stood my ground in prioritizing the comfort I paid for.
