The cockroach is probably one of the most unpleasant pests to infiltrate our houses. Their appearance, as well as their ability to fly, make them immensely feared. They also carry bacteria that can make us sick, posing a significant threat to the family’s health.
It is not an issue to be taken lightly. Prevention is one of the most effective actions we can take, and we cannot afford to leave food leftovers, dirt, or grease in the kitchen, dishes in the sink, and so on.
Here’s how to make a simple but powerful egg-based trap to eliminate cockroaches at home:
What You’ll Need:
- 1 raw egg
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- A small bowl or shallow container
Instructions:
Prepare the Egg Base:
- Crack the egg into the bowl, but only use the egg yolk and a little bit of egg white.
- The smell of the egg attracts cockroaches.
Add Sugar:
- Mix the sugar into the egg yolk. Sugar works as a bait because cockroaches are drawn to sweet foods.
Add Baking Soda:
- Stir in the baking soda thoroughly. This is the critical ingredient—it reacts with the cockroach’s stomach acid, causing internal gas buildup that kills them.
Place the Trap:
- Put the bowl in areas where you’ve seen cockroach activity, like under the sink, behind the fridge, or in dark corners of the kitchen.
Monitor and Replace:
- Check the trap daily. Replace the mixture every 2–3 days to keep it fresh and effective.
Why It Works:
- Egg and sugar lure the cockroaches in.
- Baking soda creates a lethal reaction inside their digestive system.
This homemade trap is non-toxic to humans and pets (though keep it out of reach just in case) and is a natural alternative to chemical sprays.
