Kate Middleton becomes the first Princess of Wales in over a century to be given rare royal duty

Kate Middleton has recently been granted a royal privilege that has not been extended to a Princess of Wales for more than 100 years — a role last held by Princess Mary of Teck, grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II.

A Historic Title Revived

Following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022, Kate, now 43, became the Princess of Wales alongside Prince William, who inherited the title of Prince of Wales.

The Princess of Wales title had been unused since 1997, after the tragic passing of Princess Diana in Paris.

Although Diana was widely known as the Princess of Wales, she was never given this specific honour.

A Role Last Held by Queen Mary

Recently, Kate was entrusted with the authority to issue Royal Warrants — a duty previously carried out by Queen Mary (then Princess Mary of Teck).

Royal Warrants officially recognize businesses that supply goods or services to the royal household, allowing them to display the Royal Arms on their products as a symbol of royal endorsement.

Promoting British Talent

Ian Patrick, private secretary to Prince William, told HELLO! magazine, “Their Royal Highnesses are delighted to be able to recognize and celebrate British industry, creativity, and skills through the granting of Warrants.”

These warrants generally last five years and serve as an official seal of approval from the royal family.

Kate and William are expected to start selecting businesses to support from next year.

This honour not only celebrates those companies but also allows them to use the royal coat of arms on their branding, which is a powerful symbol of prestige and support.

The Power of the ‘Kate Middleton Effect’

Kate’s influence on the fashion industry is already well-known, with the so-called “Kate Middleton effect” credited with generating around £1 million annually for the UK economy since her 2010 marriage to Prince William.

As HELLO! noted, “The princess’s decision to back a certain brand or firm will likely generate a huge amount of business and publicity for them.”

With the new Royal Warrant authority, her influence is likely to expand even further.

Potential Beneficiaries of Royal Warrants

Likely candidates for this coveted recognition include designers such as Catherine Walker, Jenny Packham, Alexander McQueen, and Erdem, all of whom Kate has frequently worn.

Jewelry and accessories brands like Kiki McDonough, Robinson Pelham, and Catherine Zoraida might also benefit from her endorsement.

Kate’s new role not only revives a royal tradition dormant for a century but also places her at the forefront of championing and uplifting British businesses, echoing the work of previous royals while bringing a fresh, modern approach.
