It will be very easy for new parents Tracey-Ann and Andrew Balasco to tell their baby twins apart – because one is black and the other is white.

Little Orlando has inherited his mum’s Jamaican colouring, with jet black hair and big brown eyes.

But sister Natalia, born a minute after him, is a blue-eyed blonde.

The chances of twins having such dramatically different skin tones are around a million to one.

But Tracey-Ann and Andrew are delighted their babies are unique. She said: “Right from the start we said we wouldn’t treat them as twins. We knew they weren’t identical but we want to make sure we call them by their names rather than ‘the twins’ to keep their individuality.

“Now because they look so different to each other, it will be easier for them to be individuals.”

Tracey-Ann is convinced that the twins’ wildly different colouring is due to past generations of mixed race in her family.

She said: “My dad is half West Indies Indian and his mum was very light skinned. On my mum’s side, her dad is mixed race and I think a great, great grandfather was white.”

Andrew, 28, who is half-Italian, is keen to ensure the twins grow up treasuring their multi-racial heritage.

He said: “They’re not just one of each, black and white. They’re half-Jamaican, one quarter-English and one quarter-Italian.”
