My MIL Wants to Buy Us a House — It’s a Trap, but My Husband Refuses to See It

My husband, Steve, and I, both 24, have been happily married for two months. We currently live in the same cozy apartment we’ve been renting for the past three years.

Steve’s parents are financially well-off, and recently, they offered to buy us a house. I should be excited, and it might sound great, but reality is far from it. I know this will have horrible consequences on my life with Steve.

The house is right in their neighborhood. Although I wouldn’t mind being closer to my in-laws, I have concerns about Steve’s mom, Carrie.

She has a tendency to intrude in our lives, and she already started to excessively involve herself in our personal affairs while we were planning our wedding.

Living in such close proximity to Carrie could mean dealing with her interference on a daily basis, especially considering that they would be the ones buying the house for us.

My mother-in-law recently stated during another argument, “I’m his mother, and just because he’s married now, it doesn’t mean I won’t have a say in how my son’s life goes from now on.” This has left me feeling concerned about our independence and privacy.

Steve sees this offer as a great opportunity for us to save money instead of spending on rent.

Me, on the other hand, I feel like this offer is a sort of a “trap” and Steve refuses to see it.

Any advice on how to navigate this situation would be greatly appreciated.
