Gross’ Burgers in Danville is currently receiving thousands of nasty social media comments as a result of a bumper sticker in the business that has been labeled racist.
The bumper sticker went viral after a diner posted a photo of the restaurant, claiming it was “absolutely disgusting.” The restaurant’s owner has subsequently refused to remove the contentious bumper sticker.The sticker reads, “If you can’t read this, thank a Marine,” and includes the Arabic phrase, “Allahu Akbar.”
According to the proprietor, Brad Gross, the sticker is one of his “patriotic items” that has been at his restaurant for over ten years. In fact, he told Fox News that he got it from a Marine during his time in Iraq.
However, the client who posted the picture of the eatery is still disgusted. Sam Schnelle’s Facebook post with the caption “f— Grossburgers” received more than 800 shares. “Totally disgusting.” Schnelle later stated that she called the restaurant to have the sticker removed, but she did not receive a positive response:
“They then handed the phone to the manager, who said, ‘We are not taking it down.'” You people are so touchy these days. And then proceeded to disagree with whatever recommendations/points I offered before hanging up.” She said, “Nice.”
Many tweets and Facebook posts have been deleted after the initial image was uploaded. Gross was a Marine himself, and he now owns a burger shop that hires fellow Marines. People in his neighborhood have supported and protected him against the complaints. “I can’t thank them enough,” he said. Furthermore, he claims to have a long history of military duty, which should be acknowledged and appreciated. He’s made it obvious that he doesn’t intend to remove the sticker.
However, some people have commented negatively on the restaurant owner’s attitude. For example, one individual commented on Schnelle’s Facebook post, “Why are all these Americans cheering for ignorance?” The capacity to communicate in more than one language should be commended. Pathetic.”
Rachel Parker tweeted, “Hey Danville people, don’t eat at Grossburgers! “Do not support racism!”
There have also been sarcastic remarks like “Ya know. I’m not a racist, but all this chatter about terrible burgers makes me need their fries.”
