Footage shows the horrifying incident as flames sputtered out of the Condor Boeing 757’s engine.

It happened shortly after take-off from the Greek holiday island of Corfu.

The flight had already reached an altitude of 36,000ft when the plane experienced a disruption to the turbine airflow, according to German broadcaster WDR.

It had been on course to fly to Düsseldorf before the blaze forced the pilots to make an emergency landing at Brindisi in Italy.

The flight touched down at the Italian airport just 40 minutes after take-off on Saturday evening.

Terrified passengers have spoken about the heart-stopping moment the fire erupted from the engine.

One person on board told Bild: “Suddenly, the power went out for a few seconds, and we realised we were no longer climbing.”

Another said: “It was an incredibly horrible experience. I already sent goodbye texts because I thought, ‘It’s over now’.”

In one TikTok video caught by an eyewitness on the ground, the plane can be seen coming down with flames bursting from its engine.

Loud booms can also be heard as it makes its descent.

A Condor spokesperson told The Sun the incident was caused by a reaction at the back of the engine – and that the engine itself was not on fire.

They said: “Flight DE3665 from Corfu to Düsseldorf diverted to Brindisi on 16 August 2025.

“The reason was a parameter indication outside the normal range caused by a disturbance in the air flow supply to the engine.

“Due to the fault message, it was precautionarily decided to divert to Brindisi.

“This posed no danger to the guests or crew members at any time.”

Another plane was sent to fly the passengers to Düsseldorf the next day.

But limited availability in Brindisi meant that not all of them received hotel accommodation.

The spokesperson added: “Unfortunately, there was insufficient hotel capacity in Brindisi, meaning that not all guests could be accommodated in hotels.

“Additional vouchers and blankets were organised at the airport, and a few shops were allowed to remain open to provide supplies.

“Passengers who took advantage of alternative accommodation options can submit their expenses for reimbursement.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but the safety of our passengers and employees is always our top priority.”

The plane is currently undergoing a technical inspection.
