If someone said there is no right answer when it comes to mathematics almost wouldn’t make sense. Many people would say it’s illogical to think this is possible.
Yet the truth is that over the years, mathematics has changed. And it will continue to change in the future.
Arriving at different answers happens due to the order of operations. It’s all about understanding what are the rules that need to be followed.
For example, how would you solve this equation?
The question, posed by popular YouTube account MindYourDecisions, was originally posted on Aug. 31, 2016 but is making the rounds across the internet again. Why? People keep arriving to two different answers: 1 and 9.
The problem often generates debate and has millions of comments on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media sites.
Can you solve it?
Some say the equation is in reality 6 / 2 x (3) = 6/6 =1
Others say the equation is in reality 6/2 = 3 x (1+2) or 3 x (3) = 9
I myself say the correct answer is 9. It is a fairly 50/50 consensus with the answers as 9 and the other 50% saying the answer is 1.
